What were the regional divisions of England?
North governed by the Council of the North
Wales and Marches - council of Wales
Ireland - council of OIreland
Calais hd a captain
What were regional divisions complicsted by
There were semi independent lordships which the King’s writ did not run
The crown had limited power in the Marches and the county paltines f Durham and Chester
There were ethnic and cultural differenv=ces - Wales, Cornwall, Ireland and Calais had their own language and culture
What was Henrys aim?
Stronger links between regional and central government - but this caused friction
Strengthen royal justice
Deal with disgruntled protesters against high tax and food shortages
Deal with pretenders
How did Henry rule the borderlands?
Through regional magnates. The Earls of Kildare controlled Ireland just like the Yorkists had done
Marches of Wales and borders of Scotland Henry used Percy and Dacre
