Regeneration of London Docklands Flashcards
The Decline of the London Docklands
The London docks of East End were the largest docks in UK during the early 1970s. In 1981, the docks closed as they could no longer accommodate larger cargo vessels ( as a result of containerisation).
Between 1978 and 1983, over 12,000 jobs were lost and male unemployment rates were as high as 60% in the 1981 census.
Between 1971 and 1981 the area’s population declined by 100,000 as people left the area to find work elsewhere.
How was the Dockland’s regeneration successful?
The LDDC (London Docklands Development Corporation) was formed in 1981 and were given planning powers to bypass local councils in Newham, tower Hamlets and Greenwich.
They brought together: property owners, architects, construction companies and investors in a market led regeneration scheme. Tax incentives were offered to attract investors. This led to the creation of many tertiary and quaternary sector jobs.
