Rebranding Urban Places - Glasgow Flashcards
What issues were faced in Glasgow?
Following the closure of Glasgow’s docks as a result of containerisation and global shift of industry, the area experienced industrial decline with up to 20,000 jobs lost per year in the early 1980s. This resulted in a spiral of decline - causing an increase in crime rates and drug abuse - especially in the Gorbals. Deprivation in Glasgow was evident by the high concentration of densely populated social housing with up to 40,000 per km².
Regenerating Glasgow (Glasgow with Style)
This took place from 2004 to 2014, it involved a £1.5 million campaign to rebrand Glasgow by increasing tourism this was done through:
- Refurbishing the Titan Crane (which had been closed for 20 years) as a tourist attraction.
- 2014 Commonwealth games
- Investment in retail - Glasgow has the largest retail centre in Scotland
Since 1998, tourism has created 6000 jobs in Glasgow which generated an estimated £23 million in revenue.
Regeneration of Glasgow Harbour
This involved the construction of 52 hectares of leisure facilities along the waterfront of the river Clyde
Varying accommodation prices to increase economic diversity
