Q

What issues were faced in the Kielder area in Northumberland?

A
  1. Very remote, meaning it was unattractive for investment and inward migration.
  2. The flooding of the valley in 1975 to create a reservoir led to the destruction of farmland and the loss of agricultural jobs.

Q

What issues were faced in Halworth?

A

The mechanisation of agriculture and the textile industry (which had been the staple of the area since the 1700s) led to fewer job opportunities. As a result, many residents left Halworth to live and work in nearby Leeds, Manchester and Bradford.

Q

What was done in Halworth?

A

The area capitalised on the tourism industry as it was home to the Bronte sisters. This involved investment into the Bronte Parsonage Museum (opened in 1928) and building walking trails into the countryside which inspired the famous authors. Additionally, the Worth railway was reopened to further increase tourist numbers due to links to the industrial past through the use of steam trains.
