What makes a place successful?
- high employment rates
- stable infrastructure
- good geostrategic location etc
Why is Sydney successful?
- iconic and unique image
- favourable climate for workers and businesses
- strict migration policy, favours highly skilled
- geostrategic location
- high wages
- proximity to emerging markets
“Failures” of Sydney?
- lack of public transport
- high risk of wildfires
- expensive housing and cost of living
Why is the “rust belt” in decline?
- car and steel manufacturing was significant
- largely deindustrialised as manufacturing has moved to Asia or southern states (where it is cheaper)
- high paid jobs in primary and secondary sectors replaced by low paying jobs in the tertiary sector
- brain drain
- high unemployment and many claim benefits

- 60% decrease in pop. since 1960s
- 40% of pop. below poverty line

Death of the high street?
- pandemic led to 125000 retail jobs to be lost
DONCASTER:
-1/5 retail units unused before pandemic
-2/5 centre is retail but less than 1/5 is offices - local clean up schemes to improve high street
What is a sink estate?
The least desirable areas of council housing (high levels of deprivation and crime, especially domestic violence)
What is a gated community?
Area with a controlled entrance full of affluent people
Why would a declining rural settlement be prioritised over a commuter village?
Commuter villages are full of more affluent workers, where as a rural village in decline leaves people with limited opportunities
What is lived experience?
A person’s first hand experience of living somewhere, made up of their thoughts, feelings, attitudes and opinions towards the place
What do levels of engagement depend on?
Age, gender, ethnicity, levels of deprivation and length of time lived there
Why does community matter?
- local knowledge leads to practical solutions
-more projects more likely to be widely accepted
-integrating people from different backgrounds
UK trends for voter turnout?
- rural areas have a higher turnout than urban areas that have been deindustrialised
-Scotland has a high voter turnout
Grampound, Cornwall?
- voted second best community in Britain
- ageing population that is isolated, and struggles to provide basic services
- 500 people live there
- opened a community shop
Conflicts caused by regeneration?
- top-down process
- many schemes motivated by economic reasons, not social or environmental
-disagreements over who the regeneration should be for - STUDENTIFICATION OF AREAS
Support for local Cornwall scheme?
GRAMPOUND PARISH COUNCIL PROPOSING TO BUILD 69 HOUSES- supported! :)
Developers worked with parish council and there were regular public meetings

WASTE INCINERATOR
caused protests
eyesore chimney, people concerned about harmful emissions
only created 7 jobs :(
Support for national Cornwall scheme?
CORNISH COUNCIL SUPPORTS RENEWABLE ENERGY
wind turbines have caused protests due to their eyesore-ness
GRAMPOUND residents were persuaded to have them due to £15000 annually from energy company for projects
Qualitative indicators?
Informal representations through contrasting media such as TV, film, graffiti, news and blogs
Quantitative indicators?
Formal representations -statistical evidence (index of multiple deprivation etc)
LOWER FALINGE (sink estate) has actually been demolished
Poor media representation
- conflicting views between residents

- bridges were taken down to stop criminals getting away
- enclosed stairwells already replaced to reduce anti-social teens
- media released statistics saying that 84% of residents claim benefits in 2010
- people feel media picks on them
