Reflexes Flashcards
what are reflexes
they are involuntary actions - preventing overloading of the brain. They are also innate, providing that immediate protection. They are also very fast
what is the reflex arc structure
There is the receptor that receives the stimulus. This signal gets sent through the sensory neurone. It will then release neurotransmitters that continues the AP through the relay neurone and then the same process to the motor neurone that sends the signal to the effectors
what is the knee jerk reflex
Tap under kneecap causes patellar to stretch. This stretches extensor. This sends reflex arc impulse through sensory neurone. Reflex signal goes along one motor neuron, causing extensor to contract. Relay neuron inhibits the other motor neuron of flexor muscle to relax. This causes leg to kick out antagonistically
what is the knee jerk reaction an example of
spinal reflex as it involves the spinal chord
what is the blinking reflex used for
to see if unconscious patients are brain dead
what type of reflex is blinking reflex
cranial reflex as it involves the brain not the spinal chord
what happens if you are brain dead
the relay neurone in the lower brain stem does not work and the blinking reflex will not work
how to test brain dead
touch cornea or shine bright light
hwo does the blink reflex occur
cornea irritated - triggers impulse along sensory neurones - to the lower brain stem where the relay neuron is to carry on the impulse - signal branches off in motor neurone to eyelid muscles - both eyes shut as a consensual response
