Q

What is conservation

A

The active management of nature and biodiversity to protect species or habitats. It also involves active management of natural resources so that they can be used without running out. This is sustainable development

Q

Conservation also involves reclamation, what is this?

A

The process of restoring ecosystems that have been damaged or destroyed. E.g. a habitat may be destroyed by floods, or as a result of a new building project. Reclamation also involves techniques such as controlled burning of areas of a forest. This can halt succession and increase biodiversity. Conservation is dynamic and needs to adapt to constant change

Q

What are examples of preservation

A

Newly discovered caves, called virgin caves, contain very sensitive geological information or unique ecosystems and interacting with it could cause irreversible damage. So by preservation, these habitats can be maintained. However this could result in no one being able to enjoy these caves and there is a question about the point of having a resource that cannot be used.

Another example can be beeches that are sites for turtle laying egg season.

Q

Economic reasons for conservation:

A

To provide resources that humans need to survive and provide an income. E.g. rainforests resources can provide medicinal drugs, clothes, and food that can,be traded. Other forest can also be used for timber and paper production.

Q

Social reasons for conservation

A

Many people enjoy the natural beauty of wild ecosystems as well as using them for activities that are beneficial to one’s health by providing a means of relaxation and exercise. Examples include bird watching, walking, cycling.

Q

Ethical reasons for conservation

A

All organisms play an important role in their ecosystem so have a right to life. Many people believe that we should not have the right to decide which organisms can survive and what we can live without. We also have a moral responsibility for future generations to conserve the wide variety of existing natural ecosystems
