Reductionism / Holism Flashcards
What is reductionism?
Behaviour can be explained by breaking it down into smaller parts.
Tries to explain behaviour using the simplest form
What’s a strength of reductionist research?
Scientific as it looks at smaller parts to measure possible cause and effect
What is a weakness of reductionist research?
May lack validity as it’s too simplistic
What is holism?
Assumes in order to understand behaviour you should consider multiple factors rather than trying to reduce these further
What is a strength of holistic research?
May be more valid if the whole explanation for that is explored
What is a weakness of holistic research?
Less scientific and may not be able to determine the cause
What studies do reductionist tend to be?
Cognitive
Biological
What studies do holistic tend to be?
Social
Developmental
Individual
What is loftus and palmer?
Reductionist as it says leading questions are the cause of poor memory for an event
What is Grant?
reductionist as it suggests the content of the environment at encoding and retrieval improve memory for an event
What is Bandura?
Reductionist as it’s suggesting aggression s learnt solely through imitating
What is Chaney?
Reductionist as it suggests adherence is improved by positive reinforcement
What is Milgram?
Reductionist as it suggests obedience is determined by the situation we are in
What is Bocchiaro?
Holistic as it looks at the situation and personality variables in the tests to see whether it’s situation or personality
What is Sperry?
Reductionist as it says the cause of our ability to transfer information between hemispheres is the corpus callosum function
