Inferential Statistics Flashcards
What is probability?
the likliehood of an event or patten of numbers occurring due to chance
What do Psycholgists say about probability?
as a general rule they need to stick with number of 95%
If their results come out significant they will say they’re 95% confident their results are NOT down to chance
Which P value do most psychologists use?
P < 0.05 the results being down to chance is less than 5%
What does it mean if the results have come out significant?
There is an actual difference or relationship in the data
What’s one problem with psychological research?
We can’t prove anything.
We can be certain our results aren’t down to chance but not 100%
What is the variance?
measures how much a set of values are spread out
How do you calculate the variance?
Work out mean for each condition
for each value subtract the mean from the score
Square each result to give a squared difference
work out the mean for all those squared differences
What is the critical value?
You use a table of critical values and the number will depend on things like how many P’s you used
