Red blood cells – basic characteristics. Hemolysis. Flashcards
red blood cells – basic characteristic 1
biconcave disc
- allows it to pass it narrow spaces like capillaries
red blood cells – basic characteristic 2
anucleated
- large SA:V for gas exchange
red blood cells – basic characteristic 3
size = 7mm
red blood cells – basic characteristic 4
no mitochondria so rely on anaerobic respiration for ATP
red blood cells – basic characteristic 5
hemoglobin proteins which binds to O2/CO2
red blood cells – basic characteristic 6
LIFE CYCLE
erythropoiesis
red blood cells – basic characteristic 7
functions x5

clinicals
hemolysis - definition
RBC bursting releasing hemoglobin into the bloodstream
hemolysis - type 1
INTRAVASCULAR HEMOLYSIS
- occurring within the blood cells
causes
- genetic conditions = spheryocytosis/ sickle cell/ thalassemia causes abnormalities in RBC membrane
- G6PD under oxidative stress
hemolysis - type 2
EXTRAVASCULAR HEMOLYSIS
- occurring outside blood vessels
causes
- mechanical damage -> heart stents
- autoimmune diseases = hemolytic anemia
- malaria infections
hemolysis - clinical 1
jaundice
too much hemoglobin breakdown = increase in bilirubun
hemolysis - clinical 2
ANEMIA
too much hemoglobin breakdown = less iron transported by hemoglobin
hemolysis - clinical 3
Hemoglobinuria
free Hb in urine
