when is rectal delivery given
A
Rectal delivery is given when:
- Oral admin is problematic - Unconscious, nauseous and postoperative - Very young , very old - Mentally disturbed patients - Drug is not suitable for oral delivery ○ Gastrointestinal side effects ○ Instability of drug at PH or in GIT ○ Taste - Locally acting drug ○ Pain/itching due to haemorrhoids Local anaesthetic, microbicides , anti-inflammatory

A
suppositories - dissolves or melts and absorbed into the blood strean tablets capsules ointment enema

requirements to suppository bases -
A
-melt/ dissolve just below body temperature
-solidify quickly after melting
-can easily be moulded
be chemically stable even when molten
release API readily
easy to handle
non-toxic and non irritant

what are the classification of the bases
A
- fatty bases
- hydrophilic bases - can draw water from rectal epithelium and cause dehydration
