powders 1 Flashcards

1
Q

what are the APIs physiochemical properties

A
  1. chemical stability - temperature, pH
  2. solubility - need to be soluble in aqueous solution to have a therapeutic effects
  3. crystal forms - API exist as polymorphs but can be crystalline as well
  4. hydroscopicity - the degree of moist uptake by the API

Q

what is the factors which effect processing?

A
  1. flowability - uniformity of weight
  2. segregation - a little difference in particle size can cause segregation
  3. bulk density - lower the bulk density - the more volume - larger the tablet which is inconvenient
    - different bulk density means different tablet weight!
  4. particle size and shape - small particles - have large surface area - faster dissolution rate

Q

how can you improve flowability?

A
  • larger particle size - make into granules ? - use a sieve
  • use lube
  • poor more slowly to reduce the inter particle force
  • change equipment
  • avoid moisture as it causes cohesion
