+ Motivates employees
+ Less risk as greater awareness of employee skills

disadvantages of internal recruitment
- Lack of new ideas
- dull and sluggish culture
what is external recruitment?
when the business looks to fill the vacancy from any suitable applicant outside the business
advantages of external recruitment
+ New ideas
+ Wider range of candidate
+ Bringing in skills required saves training costs
disadvantages of external recruitment
- Longer process
- Need to induct/get used to culture
- More expensive
- Demotivates internals who don’t get role
what is induction?
part of the recruitment and selection process as new employees need to be trained so can do the job effectively.
why is induction good?
Ensures new employee is:
- Familiar with the workplace
- Able to do the job
- Feels part of the organisation
what is on the job training?
e.g. mentoring, coaching, job rotation, apprenticeships
advantages of on the job training
+ Cheaper
+ Easier to organise
+ Less lost productivity
+ Can directly apply learning straight to the job
disadvantages of on the job training
- Opportunity cost for time of staff involved
- Low priority; quality issue?
- Lack of new ideas
- Pass on mistakes currently being made
what is off the job training?
e.g. training course, external course
advantages of off the job training
+ Wide range of skills taught
+ High-quality provision
+ Greater employee focus as not distracted from daily job
disadvantages of off the job training
- Costs; courses, travel, accommodation
- Lost productivity
- Relevance of course sometimes isn’t
particular to job
