What did men who volunteered to join the navy receive?
The Sailors received two months salary in advance however, they were expected to use this money to purchase clothes, a hammock and other equipment.
They would also protected if debt owed to creditors was less than £20.
How was naval recruitment better than the army?
It provided more incentives to join which made it a much more favourable option as the better pay drew many in.
What did Press Gangs do?
Men sieged by press gangs were ordered to either volunteer and receive naval benefits or remain a pressed man and receive nothing. It was designed to replace losses as the navy couldn’t afford to have diminished crews and they also needed skilled people such as carpenters. They often went into pubs to take advantage of alcohol.
How could someone be protected from Press Gangs?
Certain types of employment were given protection cards however, they had to be carried at all times. In times of crisis a hot press was enacted. The last time Press gangs were used was in 1815.
What were convicted petty criminals offered in regards to the Navy?
They were given the opportunity to join the navy in order to avoid harsh prison sentences.
Who was generally targeted by Press Gangs?
Generally people aged between 18 - 55 were chosen and often merchant sailors were chosen although in times of crisis non sailors were chosen.
What lead to a huge uptick in army recruitment in 1804?
Napoleon was assembling a force at Bolougne and therefore many people joined the newly founded militia. These soldiers were not eligible for serving overseas but did serve as a base for army recruitment.
What was Yeomenry?
It made up part of the militia in the UK, they were financed by wealthy businessmen and they used it to protect their interests. Limits were placed on them however, to prevent a coup.
What ways did the army use to force people to join?
They sent out Crimps to head to ale house to force people to join. People were effectively kidnapped unless they volunteered to join. They would try and trick people into joining as well as play on their patriotism to encourage them in. They were often supported by soldiers if people didn’t go willingly.
When did the system of Recruiting sergeants finally end?
The Cardwell reforms brought an end to them as bounty money was eliminated.
