Why was Cavalry described as the King of the Battlefield in Wellingtons day?
They were used extensively to attack enemy positions and a well placed cavalry charge could destroy the flank of an enemy army. For example in Waterloo Wellington unleashed the charge of the Scotts Greys which were countered by the French Lancers.
Why did the importance of cavalry decline during the Crimean War?
After the Thin red line infantry were able to fire enough rounds quickly to successfully defeat a cavalry charge without forming square which made cavalry charges far less effective.
How did the development of the Machine gun lessen the role of cavalry further?
It made any form of cavalry charge almost impossible as it allowed one soldier to easily hold a position for example during the Boer Wars cavalry played a far lesser role.
What invention was made in 1884 that further diminished the role of cavalry?
British Engineer Edward Butler invented the first ever internal combustion engine and although it remained a purely civilian item for a while experimentation in the military field began to occur.
When was the first flight and what impact did it have?
The First Flight was in 1903 and brought about a huge wage of aerial development for example aircraft started to be used in attacking and recon which significantly changed warfare.
When was the first tank developed?
The Mother was developed in 1915 and was an early attempt at restoring movement to the battlefield although they were initially unreliable and prone to breaking down they became more effective as the war progressed as shown by Cambrai and Amiens.
