Reconstruction
The period after the Civil War in the United States when the southern states were reorganized and reintegrated into the Union
The rebuilding of the U.S after the civil war
Sharecropper
A person who works fields rented from a landowner and pays the rent and repays loans by turning over to the landowner a share of the crops; form of de facto slavery
A person who rents there field out to people who pay rent and turn in a portion of the crops they harvest
Amnesty
A general pardon for an offense against a government; in general, any act of forgiveness or absolution

A social system that provides separate facilities for minority groups
Keeping people away from each-other based on race
Carpetbagger
Northerners who went to the South during Reconstruction. They carried their belongings in carpetbags, and most intended to settle in the South and make money there
Someone from the north coming to the south with there belongings in a carpet bag trying to settle in the south
Jim Crow Laws
Laws designed to enforce segregation of blacks from whites
Lynch
To kill by hanging without due process of the law
Freedmen’s Bureau
An organization started by Congress in 1865 to help newly freed African American citizens in the South
A organization guaranteeing help to former slaves
Leniency
Mildness; permissiveness; not severe in judgment or punishment
Terrorize
Coerce by violence or with threats; to frighten
Civil Rights
The rights of full citizenship and equality under the law
Suffrage
The right to vote
Poll Tax
A requirement that citizens pay a tax in order to register to vote
Scalawag
White Southerner supporting Reconstruction policies after the Civil War usually for self-interest
White Supremacy
Belief in the inherent mental, moral, and cultural superiority of whites
