Period of tension between the Soviet Union and its communist allies versus the United States and its non-communist allies.
Iron Curtain
Division between the Soviet-dominated communist nations of Eastern Europe and the democratic nations of the West.
Satellite Nations
Weaker nations that are ruled by another, more powerful nation.
Truman Doctrine
U.S. policy of helping any nation to defend itself from the spread of communism (containment of communism)
Marshall Plan
U.S. program of giving huge amounts of money to help rebuild non-Communist nations of Europe.
Berlin Blockade
Soviet Union blockage of all goods into West Berlin by rail from 1948-1949
Berlin Airlift
Relief effort by Britain and the U.S. to bring supplies to West Berlin from 1948-1949
Berlin Wall
Wall that divided communist East Berlin from democratic West Berlin from 1961-1987
United Nations
International peacekeeping organization established after World War II.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
Military alliance between United States and western European countries to protect them from Soviet aggression.
Warsaw Pact
Military alliance between Soviet Union and eastern European countries to protect them from western aggression.
Stalemate
A situation in which neither side wins.
Demilitarized Zone
Area with no military forces, such as the 38th parallel dividing North and South Korea
Second Red Scare
Widespread fear of communism during the 1950s
Senator Joseph McCarthy
Leader of the Senate committee accusing Americans of being communists, often with very little evidence.
