Airless rooms below the deck of a ship, normally reserved for cattle, in which immigrants often travelled.

Receiving station in New York City for immigrants arriving from Europe.
Angel Island
Receiving station near San Francisco for immigrants from Asia
Assimilation
The process of immigrants blending their culture into a new culture (“melting pot”)
Acculturation
The process of immigrants adapting to a new culture but still holding onto their own traditions (“salad bowl”)
Nativists
-Americans who sought to limit immigration and preserve the country for white, native-born American citizens.
Chinese Exclusion Act
Law passed in 1882 that prevented Chinese laborers (workers) from entering the U.S.
