Business Ethics
is branch of philosophy that prescribes and guides acceptable human conduct. it is the study of morality (Examines what is morally right or wrong)
Ethics (1)
refers to individual/group interaction with other people and the environment.
Human Conduct
refers to the development of an individual’s ethical standards.
Ethics (2)
is considered both an art (using personal judgement to apply values in different situations) and science (Analyzing and reasoning to decide what is right or wrong) because it deals with the content (Knowledge) of what is right and wrong, and is a process of determining what is right and wrong through moral reasoning.
Ethics
Three kinds of Ethical Issues
- Systematic
- Corporate
- Individual
refers to issues (such as the culture of corruption in government institutions) that need to be addressed through coordinated actions of different social groups (such as local government, business associations and regulating bodies)
Systematic
pertains to issues that can and should be solved within the company. if company allows its employees to be tardy all the time, it will take the unified action of its employees and the company to correct the situations through its policies.
Corporate
simply means issues that need to be resolved through individual decision making and behavioral change.
Individual
There are many philosophical approached approaches to the study of ethics. Four theories may be used as framework to guide people in justified decision making.
- Utilitarian Ethics
- Deontological Ethics
- Virtue Ethics
- Ethical relativism
(consequence-based) can be related to the notion that the greatest good produced must benefit the majority. actions are evaluated based on benefit and cost.
(means that decisions should aim to benefit the most people possible)
Utilitarian Ethics
(Duty-Based) can be explained as respecting people’s right and should be treated with dignity. this theory states that the morality of an action is based on normative rules rather than consequences like utilitarianism.
(it focuses on respecting people’s rights and treating them with dignity, regardless of the outcome or consequences of our actions)
Deontological Ethics
(Character-Based) refers to righteousness and what makes a good person. this approach focuses on an individual’s character in ethical decision-making, rather than consequences or duty.
Virtue Ethics
(Culture Based) states that ethical standards cannot be absolute and be applied to all (people of all societies)
Ethical Relativism
is a person’s entitlement to something. such as legal, social or freedom.
