Existential: What is the world asking of me?
Behaviorism: How do I intend to answer?
Basic needs that people have.
- belonging (to be a party of a group)
- power (to be competent)
- fun (to find life pleasurable)
- freedom (to be able to choose)
Explain the mindset of “What am I doing?”
Every action is a client’s best attempt to fulfill their basic needs.
“What am I doing to make myself depressed?”
“In what ways am I allowing myself to be anxious?”
Theory of Change
- change occurs when people believe new behaviors will better fulfill their basic needs
- long-term change occurs when clients are able to apply choice theory without your help

Mental illness doesn’t exist. People just choose inappropriate behaviors to meet their basic needs.
Role of the therapist
- be congruent with reality
- attune effectively
- challenge the client
- accept the client’s mistakes
Role of the client
- try their best
What does the therapist do?
- listen and accept
- plan new behaviors (SMART goals)
- inquire and challenge (point out inconsistencies that you hear in a person’s life)
- be honest with yourself (resent/love/appreciate/be repulsed by/dread your clients)
