Instructional Procedures:
Tell students to read first two paragraphs orally
have the student complete the remainder independently
tell student to answer all questions on reverse side without looking back in the story
when the student is on grade level - tell the student to take notes as he is reading
School Skills: studying for tests answering chapter questions answering questions that include who, what where, when, why, how collecting information for research papers focusing on important information developing note cards finding key words in word problems supporting a topic sentence reading comprehension
Using the Context

Instructional Procedures:
read first passage with student
as the student encounters the missing words they say “blank” in each place
have the student now attempt to discover the best choices
have student re-read passage with substituting in the word he selected
School Skills: distinguishing important information from unimportant details identifying key words in text understanding terms in text building vocabulary skills using context clues identifying correct answers even when unsure of some words answering chapter questions answering fill in the blank questions reading comprehension

have students read directions orally
complete the example with the student
have them complete the remainder independently

Getting the Main Idea
G.E.
Pre-K - 12.0
have student read first paragraph orally and then ask “what is the paragraph talking about”
have student read second and describe main idea in their own words
assign remainder to be completed independently
when student is on grade level, tell student to read paragraph and write the main idea in their own words in their student response books before looking at the answer choices
School Skills: reading comprehension answering chapter questions studying for tests note taking creating an outline completing essay tests summarizing information writing a research paper creating a thesis creating a topic sentence organizing your thoughts focusing on important information
