Q

pull it sideways

A

in a direction to the left or right, not forwards or backwards
- The fence is leaning sideways.
- If you would move sideways to the left, I can get everyone in the picture.
- Crabs walk with a sideways motion.
- don´t hold your phone upiright, turn it phone sideways

I think in most situations “Turn sideways” means simply rotate (through some axis) 90 degrees but don’t move. If someone is facing me and I say “Turn sideways”, I just mean turn, without moving from where you are now standing, so I can see you from the side.

If someone is driving a car and you need to give them directions for the next turn, you would not say “Turn sideways” you’d simply say Turn (left or right) here. With a helicopter, it is not unusual for the machine to rotate in place (it is impossible for a car ! ) so it’s not totally clear whether forward motion is involved or not

I suppose if you turn sideways, you are turning to the right or left, but it’s used a little differently. You could tell someone in a car to turn right or left but you wouldn’t tell them to turn sideways. I was trying to think of an example. If you were trying to fit through a narrow doorway (maybe the door could not be opened all the way) you may have to “turn sideways” to fit through - that is - instead of walking facing straight ahead, you would have to turn to the side and walk with your side going first. I think I may not be making myself clear - I’m sorry! Maybe someone else can explain it better than me!
