Reactivity 3.2. - Electron Transfer Reactions Flashcards
What is oxidation (less specific definition)
Gain of oxygen or loss of hydrogen
What is reduction (less specific definition)
Loss of oxygen or gain of hydrogen
What is the more sophisticated definition of oxidation and reduction
Oxidation is the loss of electrons and reduction is the gain of electrons.
Useful mnemonic is: OIL RIG
What is the oxidation state of free elements
0
Relation between net charge on the species and the oxidation states of the atoms in the species.
The sum of the oxidation states of all that atoms in a species
must be equal to the net charge on the species.
State the oxidation state of group 1 in compounds
+1
State the oxidation state of fluorine in compounds
-1
State the oxidation state of group 2 (an also Zn and Cd) in compounds
+2
State the oxidation state of hydrogen in compounds
+1
State the oxidation state of oxygen in compounds
-2
State the oxidation state of group 7 in compounds

Define Oxidising Agent
The species which removes the electrons from another substance; it itself is reduced.
Define Reducing Agent
The species which gives the electrons from another substance; it itself is oxidized.
