Reactions 😱 Flashcards
Why is a hydrolysis reaction?
Breaks glycosidic bonds into 2 monosaccharides by adding a molecule of water.
What are microfibrils made up of?
Made up of cellulose molecules.
What is a hydrogen bond?
Weak attractions between hydroxyl groups and hydrogen atoms.
What are the most common elements for carbon to bond with?
Hydrogen and oxygen.
What is the meaning of ‘saccharides’?
Sugar/s.
What are carbohydrates used for?
To provide energy in respiration and also for structural purposes too.
What is the chemical formula for glucose?
C6 H12 O6
What happens to the solution in the Benedict’s test if a reducing sugar is present?
Brick red.
What is the test for starch?
Add iodine. Starch is present when the colour is blue/black.
What is a condensation reaction?
Bonds 2 molecules in a glycosidic bond by removing a water molecule.
