DNA replication Flashcards
What is Mitosis?
When cells replicate and are genetically identical.
What is Meiosis?
When cells replicate and they vary genetically (sex cells).
What is the name for when the cell divides AFTER nuclear division?
Cytokinesis
Why is accurate replication important for cells?
Mistakes in replication cause mutations. DNA codes for proteins so if mutations happen, proteins can’t carry out their functions.
Why is DNA easily extracted from bacterial cells?
Because the nuclear membrane doesn’t need to be broken (Bacteria don’t have nuclei)
Why is DNA replication semi-conservative?
Because only one strand from the double helix shape is used in replication.
What are the 3 enzymes used in cell replication? What are their roles?
Helicase, Polymerase, Lipase
Breaks hydrogen bonds, joins the nucleotides, joins the sections of DNA together.
