Mitosis Flashcards
What are the 4 stages of mitosis?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase
What is the name of the period where the cell is not under mitosis?
Interphase
What are G1 and G2?
Gaps in the mitosis cycle.
What is cancer?
When cell division is rapid and therefore cells don’t differentiate so build up into a tumour.
How many types of cancer are there?
about 200
What is a Benign tumour?
These are harmless and don’t spread to other organs.
What is a Malignant tumour?
The grow rapidly and cause damage. Cells can travel through the bloodstream and form secondary tumours. These can all effect vital organs.
What is the name f the process where secondary tumours are formed?
Metastasis.
Where does G1 occur?
During interphase.
Where does G2 occur?
After the S-phase
What is the S-phase?
When the DNA is replicated.
What does the ‘S’ stand for in S-phase?
Synthesis
Why can’t chromosomes be seen during interphase?
Because the DNA has not coiled into chromosomes - Chromatin.
