Lipids & Fatty acids 🍰 Flashcards
What are lipids insoluble in?
Water.
What does non-polar mean?
They have no charge.
What elements do lipids contain?
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorous.
What is a triglyceride?
A molecule of glycerol and 3 fatty acids joined together with condensation reactions.
How many different fatty acids are there?
70.
What do all fatty acids contain?
Carboxyl groups.
What are ester bonds?
Bonds formed between the carboxyl groups and the hydroxyl groups of a fatty acid.
How are triglycerides broken down?
Broken into fatty acids and glycerol using a hydrolysis reaction.
What fatty acids are found in animals?
Saturated.
What type of fatty acid is found in plants?
Unsaturated.
What is a saturated fatty acid?
An acid that uses the maximum number of hydrogen atoms so there are no double bonds.
What is an unsaturated fatty acid?
They have at least one double covalent bond.
What is a polyunsaturated fatty acid?
They have many double bonds. These chains are kinky.
What are lipids?
Group of compounds like fats and oils.
