RBCs and Anemias lecture Flashcards
Where does erythropoiesis occur
Bone marrow
Where is erythropoietin produced
kidneys
What is a reticulocyte
an immature RBC
What is the lifetime of a RBC
120 days
What are the 3 general classifications of anemia
Decreased RBC PRODUCTION(reticulocytopenia), DESTRUCTION(reticulocytosis) , or BLOOD LOSS
What are the general normal reference ranges for anemia
Females: Hgb <12 g/dL
Males: Hgb <14 g/dL
You have a young child come to you with exhaustion and craving for specific foods like ice, dirt, and paper. What other symptoms would you expect them to have and what disorder are you thinking about?
Think about Iron deficiency anemia (IDA)
Have PICA (craving for ice or dirt), brittle nails, dysphagia due to esophageal webs.
PE will show smooth tongue (atrophic glossitis, angular cheilosis/chelitis, Spoon nails (Koilonychia).

If you see Koilonychia and angular chelitis, what might the patient have?
Iron deficiency anemia
Your patient has low Hgb, Low MCV, Low MCH, Low Retic, Low ferritin, Low serum iron, and Elevated TIBC. What might be going on? What symptoms might they have?
Iron deficiency anemia.

Most common cause of reticulocytopenia
Iron deficiency
You have a patient who has a priapism. What disease is this characteristic of
Sickle cell crisis
You have a patient who has dactylitis. What disease is this characteristic of
Sickle cell disease ( Infarction of bone/pain crisis occuring in hands)
Your pathology report shows a patient has Howell-Jolly bodies on a blood smear. What is this characteristic of
Sickle Cell disease
