Myeloproliferative neoplasms Flashcards
What is myeloproliferative neoplasm
Clonal myeloid conditions where blood production is unregulated and independent of growth factors. High RBCs.
What are the qualities of polycythemia vera
Acquired MPN. Overproduction of RBCs. Age is 60 and survival is 15 years
What can polycythemia vera turn into
Risk of transformation to Myelofibrosis or AML.
Primary vs secondary polycythemia
Primary- Increased RBCs because of a mutation in RBC progenitor cells
Secondary- Something else causes EPO increase which causes increased RBCs
Secondary conditions that cause polycythemia
Inherited
Hypoxia, Pulmonary, high altitude, tumors, smoking leads to increased EPO leads to more RBCs
Clinical manifestations of Polycythemia
Puritis, erythromegalgia ( burning pain in feet or hands), headache, fatigue, plethora
Erythrocytosis definition
Increased elevation of Hemoglobin and hematocrit in peripheral blood
IF you see facial plethora polycythemia vera what disease are you considering
Polycythemia vera ( polycythemia, type of myeloproliferative neoplasm)
What is a band
Immature neutrophil (often bc of acute infection)
What are the lab value changes for Tumor lysis syndrome
Uric acid, potassium, phospherus all hyper, Calcium goes down (HypOcalcemia)
