Rates Of Reactions Maud Flashcards
How do you measure the effects of changes in Surface area Concentration of solutions Temperature Use of a catalyst?
React calcium carbonate marble chips with dilute hydrochloride acid
Measure the mass or volume of CO2 produced
By weighing the difference in mass of the reactants or the amount of carbon dioxide produced
Change the surface area by using smaller marble chips
Change the concentration by diluting the hcl
For the reaction of hcl with calcium carbonate to occur…?
What happens?
Acid particles must collide with the surface of the marble chips
As the acid particles get used up, the collision rate decreases, so the reaction slows down.
How do catalysts work?
Catalysts speed up the rate of reactions but aren’t used up in the process
It gives an alternate route for reactions with a lower activation energy (it does not lower the activation energy)
