Rate Of Reaction Flashcards
The effect of concentration on a reaction rate
- put 25cm3 of sodium thiosulohate in a flask
- Measure 5cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid in a measuring cylinder
- add the acid to the flask and start the timer
- swirl to mis and put on a cross
- Record the time taken for the cross to disappear
- then repeat the steps using different concentrations of sodium thiosulphate
The lower the volume of sodium thiosulohate the more time it takes for the cross to disappear
Experiment to measure how surface area of marble chips affects the rate of reaction
Weigh out 2g of marble chips
Measure out 20cm3 of HCL using a measuring cylinder
Set up apparatus
Record the time take to collect 60cm3 of co2
Try with different sized chips
Small chips dissolve fastest because they have the largest surface area.
The effect of temp on reaction rate
The higher the temp the more energy the particles get which causes more collisions. And the rate of reaction speeds up. This results in the time taken to react getting quicker as the temp increases
Catalysts
Speed up chemical reactions without being used up.
Provide an alternative pathway for a reaction to follow, which has a lower activist in energy. More particles have enough energy to react.
Graphs
The higher the temperature the steeper the line. Particles have more energy so the rate is faster to start with. If concentrations are equal, the graphs plateau at he same level
