Step by step
Step 1 hands
Perform hand hygiene.
a. Cover all surfaces of hands with hand sanitizer.
b. Rub hands together until hands are completely dry.

Explain the procedure to the resident.

Do not cause the resident discomfort/pain anytime during ROM
step 4 raise
Raise the bed height
step 5 curtain
Provide for privacy
Step 6 position
Position the resident supine (bed flat)

Position the resident in good body alignment

Place one hand under the resident’s knee
step 9 hands 3
Place the other hand under the resident’s ankle
step 10 ROM ab
ROM for Hip: Move the resident’s entire leg away from their body. abduction
step 11 ad
Move the resident’s entire leg toward their body. adduction
step 12 x
Complete abduction and adduction of the resident’s hip at least three times
step 14 continue
Continue to correctly support the resident’s joints by placing one hand under the resident’s knee and the
other hand under the resident’s ankle
step 15 flex
Bend the resident’s knee and hip toward the resident’s trunk flexion of the hip and knee
step 16 ext
Straighten the resident’s knee and hip extension of the hip and knee
step 17 x
Complete flexion and extension of the resident’s knee and hip at least three times.
step 18 wu wei
Do not force any joint beyond the point of free movement
step 19 bold ask
You must ask the resident at least once during the ROM exercise if there is/was any discomfort/pain
step 20 leave
Leave the resident in a comfortable position.

Lower the bed.

Maintain respectful, courteous interpersonal interactions at all times

Place the call light or signaling device within easy reach of the resident
