Random Flashcards
What is hepcidin and what is its function in the metabolisation of iron?
25 amino acid peptide hormone. Regulates iron uptake and release in response to circulating and tissues levels. INCREASING > reponse to reduce iron levels. So- bleeding- hepcidin DECREASES and leads to INCREASED importation of iron by ferroportin
What is ferroportin?
Transmembrane protein which exports iron into the blood from enterocytes an macrophages
What are ferric iron (fe2+) and ferrous iron (fe3+)?
Non heam iron from cereal and vegetable sources. FERROUS is better absorbed from gut so ferric is reduced to forrous
How much iron does female of reproductive age need per day?
12mg
How much levonogestral in mirena?
52mg
What is ferritin?
The main strorage protein for iron
What is transferrin?
Iron binding protein produced by the liver. Acts as an intracellular transported for iron
What percentage of girls undergoing intracranial radiation develop hypogonadotrophic hydogonadism?
11%
What percentage of prolactin is monomeric 23kDa?
80-90%
8-20% dimeric (45-50dKa)
1-5% polymeric (150dKa)
What type of hyperprolactinaemia is generally not associated with pituitary pathology?
MACROprolactinaemia- likely normal gonadotrophin activity and gonadal control
What is ogilvie syndrome?
Acute large bowel obstruction without a mechanical cause. RIF pain due to distention caecum
Bosentan is a duel endothelial receptor used for treatment of pulmonary hypertension. Which contraception should be offered?
enzyme inducer so cannot have mini pill. Can have COC at double dose but not reccommended so best to used injectable progesterone as enzyme efficacy not effected
Via which receptor does ADH act on the kidneys?
V2
Gestational causes of diabetes insipidus
- INCREASED placental vasopressinase production (multiple preg)
- DECREASED hepatic degredation pf placental vasopressinase (PET, Heamolysis, elevated liver enzymes)
