Heart borders on normal CXR
RA
LV
Right lung properties
3 lobes: upper, middle, lower
horizontal fissure - between RUL, RML
oblique fissure - between RML, RLL
Left lung properties
2 lobes: upper, lower
oblique fissure - between LUL and LLL
Lingula - part of LUL
Silhouette sign
Loss of the normal borders between adjacent thoracic structures
You should see a silhouette sign on normal CXR. This sign becomes lost in disease
Loss of right heart border
Pathology in the RML
Loss of the right hemi-diaphragm

Loss of the left heart border
Pathology in the LUL
Loss of the left hemi-diaphragm
Pathology in the LLL
PET scan
Inject a glucose analogue into patient and this shows metabolically active areas (e.g. tumours)
Detects nodal metastases and distant metastases
Ultrasound (US)
Doesn’t travel well through air or bone
Travels well through fluid (i.e. pleural effusion)
