Aims to enforce employers to carry out their duty to employees working with the risk of ionising radiation exposure

What do local rules do?
Ensure that radiography is carried out safely and accordance with the Ionising Radiation Regulation 2017
Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS)
Internal employee, who has undergone additional training
Enforce local rules and Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017
Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA)
External representative, appointed by practice.
Establish the practices local rules and modifications to the x-ray suit.
What does Lead Gloves do?
Protect arms from scatter radiation, NOT primary beam
Store flat, prevent cracking
Lead gloves equivalent thickness
0.35mm
What do gowns do?
Protection against scatter
Should always be worn whilst working in controlled area
Store upright, no folding
Gowns minimum equivalent thickness
0.25mm LE
What does Thyroid protector do?
Worn around neck to protect thyroid gland
Store flat
Thyroid minimum LE
0.5mm
How far should person stand away from primary beam?
2m, ideally leave room when conducting radiography
Restricted Personnel
The follow cant work with radiography:
-Under 16s
- Pregnant
- Part time employees
- General public
Patient Safety
- Should be sedated or under GA
- Sandbags, ties and wedges
-Collars and harnesses removed
