Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Flashcards
1
Q
What is an MRI?
A
Imaging the central nervous system
Does not use ionising radiation
2
Q
How does MRI work?
A
- Body tissues become magnetized- alligning proton and hydrogen atoms
- Radiofrequency coil (RF) emits pulses of radiowaves - atoms become disorientated
- Atoms emit small radiowaves as they return to theor normal alignment
- Emitted radiowaves detected by the RF coil and transformed into image
3
Q
Patient Prep
A
- GA used
- Collars, leads and other metallic objects removed
- Only trained staff can use the MRI
4
Q
Advanatges
A
- bETTER FOR SOFT TISSUE SCANS
- uSES MAGNETISM AND RADIO ENERGY
- pLANES: TRAnsverse, sagittal, oblique, dorsal
5
Q
Disadvnatges
A
- Less sensitive to calcified tissues
-High purchase and running costs
- Animal must be anaesthetised
