Radiographic outcome of root canal treatent of canine teeth in cats: 32 cases (1998–2016) Strom, Ari, Verstraete Flashcards
How many cats in the study & how many teeth?
32 cats and 37 canine RCT
How were the results defined and what percentage of cats fell into each category?
Success 49%
(periapical PDL space was within reference limits and preopera-tive EIRR, if present, had stabilized)
No evidence of failure 32%
(NEF if preoperative EIRR had stabilized and preexisting PL remained the same or decreased in size but had not completely resolved.)
Failure 19%
(PL or EIRR developed subsequent to endodontic treatment or preexisting PL had increased in size or preoperative EIRR appeared to have progressed after RCT)
What were the outcomes for teeth with preexisting EIRR?
7 of the 37 (19%) teeth had evidence of EIRR associated with preoperative pulpal necrosis, and the treatment outcome was classified as successful, NEF, or failure for 1, 3, and 3 of those teeth
What was the medin follow up time in these cases?
The median follow-up period was 14 months (range, 3 to 72 months)
Obturation voids were seen in 20 of the 37 root canal treatments what difference was there in success of the RCT if the void was in the apical 3rd and was it statisticlly significant?
Obturation voids in the apical third of the pulp cavity were associated with a 5-fold increase (IRR, 5.01; 95% CI, 0.88 to 28.42) in the rate of RCT failure; however, that relative rate was not significant (P = 0.069)
Was the presence of EIRR prior to RCT associated with an increase in failure rates?
Teeth with evidence of periapical EIRR prior to RCT had a 10-fold increase (IRR, 10.5; 95% CI, 1.66 to 66.29; P = 0.012) in the rate of additional postoperative periapical EIRR and therefore treatment failure.
Was age or sex associated with an increased failure rate?
Age was also significantly (P = 0.029) associated with an increased rate of continued EIRR (IRR, 1.26; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.55). Evidence of postop-erative EIRR was identified in 6 cats, and the age of those cats was 5 (n = 2 cats), 10 (1), and 12 (1) years (the age was not reported for the remaining 2 cats). Sex was not significantly (P = 0.41) associated with rate of RCT failure (IRR, 1.95; 95% CI, 0.4 to 9.63
What type of obturation was most commonly associated with overfill?
Vertical compaction with thermoplastic GP
What was the conclusion of the study?
That RCT therapy is a suitable method of treating endodontically compromised teeth in cats.
What was noteed in the period >2years after RCT?
There was a steady increase in failure rates indicating long termfollow up is important in cats.
