What are these electrosurgery probes used for?
These are electrosurgcial loops. they are used for planing to remove the bulk of hyperplastic tissue after the initial cold steel gingivectomy. The unit is set to cut and the loop moved through the tissue in a sweeping movement maintaining the normal contours of the gingiva over the bone ( it should not char nor drag)
Ginival enlargement is a common sequelae to what?
Acute and chronic ginigvitis.
What drugs have been known to cause gingival enlargement?
Immunosuppressants such as cyclosporine, anticonvulsants & calcium channel blockers.

Radiographic signs of osseous proliferation in gingival enlargement warrants incisional biopsy to determine if there is histopathological evidence of neoplasia before gingivectomy or gingivoplasty is performed.

What is the emphasis of treatment of gingival enlargement?
Treatment emphasizes removal of excess gingival tissue by gingivectomy with gingivoplasty to restore normal physiological contours.

The large picture demonstrates use of a periodontal probe to measure the depth of a psuedopocket cause by ginigval enlargement.
The inset picture is ahowing the probe being placed on the outside of the ginigiva to enable a bleeding point to be made to mark the line of gingivectomy.
What technique is being used in this picture and what must be avoided when using this tehnique?
Diamond bur contouring is being performed. A course tapered diamond bur is used for final contouring of the ginigva and removal of a thin layer of presumed thermally damaged skin.
Care must be taken to maintain the bevel created by the scalpel blade incision and not touch the bur to the tooth.
What frequency of electrical current is used during electrosurgery for ginigvectomy?
1.5- 7.5 mHz
What are the three basic types of electrosurgical instrument tips and what are they used for.
Single wire electrodes used for incising and excising
Loop electrodes for planing
Flat or round electrodes for electrocoagulation.
What two methods can be used to reduce themal damge with electrosurgery.
Alwys keep the electrode tip moving.Avoid any draggin thismeans power is too low and avoid charring and sparking this means power is too high.
apply the elecrode in intervals allowing 5-10 seconds of cooling between applications
Gingival healing marked by epithelialisation is expected within what period?
How long before there is complete healing of the connective tissue?
5-14 days for epithelialisation
Complete connective tissue healing within 4 weeks
