JVD 2009 2 Immunohistochemical Analysis of a Dentigerous Cyst in a Dog Kayo Kuyama, Kazuhiko Hayashi, Sisilia Fusi Fufita, Isao Satoh, Hirotsugu Yamamoto Flashcards
What is a dentigerous cyst?
A cyst that encloses part or the entire
crown of an impacted or late-erupting tooth and occurs with
comparatively high frequency in humans
Describe the radiographic features of a dentigerous cyst?
Radiography demonstrates a well-defined unilocular and radiolucent lesion associated in some way with the crown of the unerupted tooth.
What is the most common age of onset of a dentigerous cyst?
2months to 5 years
What did the immunohistochemical finings in this case indicate?
The immunohistochemical findings suggested that the biological behavior of dentigerous cysts might be associated with deregulation of cell death in the lining
epithelium of odontogenic origin, along with proliferative activity caused by inflammation.
What are the differential diagnoses for this type of lesion?
Dental abscess, odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts, odontogenic and non-odontogenic tumor/carcinoma, fibrous
dysplasia of bone, and other fibro-osseous lesions of the mandible and maxilla bone
What is the non keratinised epithelium of the cyst in this case immunoreactive for in this case and what does this mean?
The non-keratinized epithelium is immunoreactive for amelogenin and ssDNA,
which might be associated with deregulation of cell death in the lining epithelium, derived from odontogenic origin.
