Radioactivity Flashcards
1
Q
Radioactive isotopes
A
Where the nucleus is unstable so it decays and emits radiation
2
Q
Background radiation
A
- Around us all the time
- Radiation from space
- Radiation due to human activity
3
Q
Radiation causes
A
Ionisation by bashing into atoms and knocking electrons off them
4
Q
Alpha
A
- 2 protons and neutrons
- Strongly ionising
- They deflect by electric and magnetic fields
5
Q
Beta
A
- Moderately ionising
2. Also charged
6
Q
Gamma
A
- No mass just energy
- Weakly ionising
- Emission always happens after beta or alpha decay
7
Q
Medical tracers (beta and gamma)
A
- Radiation penetrates body tissues
- Computer converts reading to an on screen display showing where it is coming from
- Has a shirt half-life
8
Q
Industrial tracers (gamma)
A
- If there’s a crack in the pipe then the gamma source will collect outside the pipe and the detector will show extra high radioactivity
- Has a short half-life
9
Q
Radioactive dating of rocks
A
By measuring amount of a radioactive isotope left in a smaller and knowing its half-life you can deduce how long it has been around
10
Q
Activity
A
Activity if a radioactive source is equal to the number of decays per second
11
Q
Half-life
A
The average time taken for half of the original mass of the sample to decay
