Energy- Triple Flashcards
1
Q
Advantages and disadvantages of fossil fuels
A
ADVANTAGES:
- Release a lot of energy cheaply
- Doesn’t rely on the weather
DISADVANTAGES:
- Carbon dioxide released contributes to global warming and climate change
- Burning coal and oil makes sulfur dioxide(acid rain)
- It is going to run out
2
Q
Nuclear reactors
A
- Expensive to build and maintain
- Processing the uranium causes pollution and there is a high risk of leaks
- Always get radioactive waste
- Don’t produce any greenhouse gases and there is plenty of uranium left in the ground
3
Q
Geothermal energy
A
- Free, renewable energy with no environmental problems
- Main drawback is the cost of drilling
- Cost of building a power plant is often high compared to the amount of energy you get out of it
4
Q
Wind farms
A
- Cheap to run and wind is free
- No polluting waste and its renewable
- Spoils the view and can be noisy
- Expensive to set up and relies on the weather
5
Q
Wave power
A
- No pollution and its renewable
- Spoils the view and is a hazard to boats
- Unreliable as the waves die when the wind drops
- Initial costs are high but there are no fuel or running costs
6
Q
Solar energy
A
- Sun is renewable
- Initially expensive
- No pollution
- Generates electricity on a small scale
7
Q
Tidal barrages
A
- No pollution and its renewable
- Tides are pretty reliable but the height varies
- Initial costs are moderately high
8
Q
Hydroelectricity
A
- Renewable
- No pollution
- Big impact on environment: loss of habitat and release of carbon dioxide and methane by rotting vegetation
- Initial costs are high
