Energy Flashcards
Name the nine types of energy
- Electrical
- Light
- Sound
- Kinetic
- Nuclear
- Thermal
- Gravitational potential energy
- Elastic potential energy
- Chemical
What makes an efficient device
The less energy wasted the more efficient it is
Sankey diagrams
They are used to show how much input energy is usefully compared with how much is wasted
Radiation
Transfer of heat energy by electromagnetic waves and the emission of thermal radiation that occurs in solid liquids and gases
Conduction
Where vibrating particles pass on their extra kinetic energy to neighbouring particles
Convection
Transfer of energy by the more energetic particles moving from the hotter region to the cooler region
Objects and heat radiation
- An objects that’s hotter than its surroundings emit more radiation than it absorbs
- An object that’s cooler than its surroundings absorbs more radiation than it emits
Loft insulation
Fibreglass wool prevents heat loss by conduction and radiation
Double glazing
Two layers of glass with a narrow gap between reduces conduction and convection
Draught proofing
Strips of foam around doors and window prevents convection
Cavity wall undulations
Foam squirted between bricks stop convection and radiation but prevents conduction
Work
When a force moves an object, energy is transferred and work is done
Power
The rate at which something is done
Features of non-renewable energy
- They will run out
- Damage the environment
- Supply most of our energy
Typical power station
- Fuel
- Boiler
- Turbine
- Generator
- Grid
