Radio Communication Flashcards
What is the formula of a wave frequency ?
Speed of Light/ Wave length
What are the Very Low Frequencies ? ( VLF )
0-30 kHz ( surface waves ) used for long distance navigation-Omega, Deltrac.
What are the Low Frequencies ? (LF )
30-300 kHz ( surface waves ) used for ADF, Radio Stations, Some surveillance radar (S/R).
What are the Medium Frequencies ? (MF )
300-3000 kHz ( Surface and Sky waves ) used for ADF, Some S/R .
What are the High Frequencies ? ( HF )
3000 - 30000 kHz ( Sky waves ) used for Radio communication, Telegraph, Some long distance Radar.
What are the Very High Frequencies ? ( VHF )
30 - 300 MHz ( Line of sight waves ) used for Radio communication (ATC), VOR, VDF, ILS Localiser.
What are the Ultra High Frequencies ? (UHF)
300-3000 MHz ( Line of sight waves ) used for DME, ILS glide slope, Some surveillance Radar.
What are the Super High Frequencies ? (SHF)
3000-30000 MHz ( Line of sight waves ) used for Some Surveillance Radar, Dopplet Radar, Weather Radar, Radar altimeter.
What are the Extremely High Frequencies ? (EHF)
30000-300000 MHz ( Line of sight waves ) used for Ground circulation radar, Experimental radar.
What is the Low speed antenna maximum speed ?
250 Kts
What is the High speed antenna maximum speed ?
600 Kts
What is a Primary Surveillance Radar ( PSR )?
It informs about position and reflect parts of the electromagnetic energy sent ( Aircraft is a passive element)
What is a Secondary Surveillance Radar ( SSR)
Informs about position, altitude and identification.
The radar sends an interrogation signal ( Aircraft is an active element )
What can we find in a control tower ?
- Radio system
- Telephone and Intercom system
- A strip board
- A light gun
- A rotating beacon ( not always )
- A radar ( not always )
When it is compulsory to direct informations to the ground station of a MF area or to broadcast?
- Maneuvering ( before entering the area )
- Departure ( before moving onto the runway, before and after takeoff, when clear of area)
- Arrival ( 5 min prior to enter the area, when joining the aerodrome circuit [ downwind, final, clear of runway])
- Through ( 5 min prior to enter the area , when clear of the area )
If there is no radio at an uncontrolled aerodome what would be the ATF frequency used ?
123.2 MHz
What is a FSS ?
A Flight Service Station, it’s a consultative service.
Make weather reports - Communicate the active or preferred runway - Provide field condition reports - Share NOTAMs and PIREPs - Give information on the known aircraft and vehicle traffic.
What is a PAL ?
A Preferical Air ground Link . It is an unstaffed VHF/UHF transmitter/receiver used to facilitate contact between pilots and controllers.
What is a DRCO ?
A Dial-Up Remote Communication Outlet.
It uses telephone to relay for Pilots communication to FSS and provide flight information service en route.
Activated by keying 4 times on the micro. It dials rings and FSS answers.
What is a RCO ?
A Remote Communication Outlet.
it is a long distance radio communication to FSS. It uses antennas relay for pilots communication to FSS.The pilot should state the aircraft identification, name and location of the RCO followed by the individual letters in a non phonetic form.
Where can I find the Control tower frequencies, Uncontrolled airports frequencies, VOR Frequencies
Navigations maps ( VNC, VTA, WAC, LO-Enroute )
Where can I find all the frequencies used on airports ?
In the CFS
Where can I find all the frequencies and procedures for instrument approach and landing ?
In the CAP ( Canada Air Pilot )
What is the scope of the Arrival/Departure control and where can we find the frequencies ?
It regards the traffic control from the circuit to En Route or En Route to the approach.
Mainly for IFR or CVFR. The frequencies can be found on CFS and IFR approach charts.
