Radio Aids Flashcards
PBN definition
RNAV definition
Method of navigation that permits aircraft operation on any desired flight path within the coverage of ground or space based navigation aids or combination of these
Aircraft meet requirements of RNAV, a specified nav accuracy must be met 95 per cent of flight time
GPS:
Space-based radio nav system
24 satellite constellation is designed to ensure at least 5 satellites are always visible to a user worldwide - minimum 4 necessary for user to establish accurate three dimensional position
RAIM definition and brief description
Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring
- capability of GPS received to perform integrity monitoring on itself by ensuring available satellite signals meet integrity requirements for a given phase of flight - without RAIM pilot has no assurance of the GPS positional integrity .
- RAIM provides immediate feedback to pilot
- This fault detection is critical for PBN and RNAV - because delays of two hours can occur before erroneous satellite transmission is detected and corrected by satellite control segment
RAIM requires 5 satellites or 4 and barometric altimeter input or FDE, 6 satellites or 5 with baro-aiding (allows GPS to isolate corrupt satellite signal)
RNP - General and RNP operations overview
RNP is an RNAV system that includes onboard performance monitoring and alerting capability (e.g RAIM)
It’s a statement of navigation performance necessary for operation within a defined airspace
Inertial Navigation System (INS)
Combine components of IRU with internal navigation computer.
IRU calculate position and velocity
