Air emission limit to general public
TEDE = 10 mrem/year
Occupational TEDE limit
5 rem/year (50 mSv)
Dose to lens of eye (LDE)
15 rem/year (150 mSv/year)
shallow dose equivalent
50 rem/year (500 mSv)
Annual limit on intake
5 rem / year; 50 Rem per organ over 50 years
Dose limit for pregnant workers
500 mrem
Derived Air Concentration
concentration if inhaled over 2000 hours - limit to public is 100mrem
RAM posting
“Caution Radioactive Material” >10x Appendix C values
RAM posting exceptions
- <8 hrs if protected
- contains sealed sources <5mrem/hr
- Certain teletherapy/treatment rooms
Radiation area criteria
> 5 mrem/hr at 30 cm from source
High Radiation area criteria
> 100 mrem/hr at 30 cm from source
Very High Radiation area criteria
> 500 rad/hr at 1 meter from source
Airborne Radioactivity Area
- < DAC
- 0.6% ALI in one week
- 12 DAC-hours in one week
When is personnel dosimetry required?
- Worker dose >10% of limits
- Dose to a minor >0.1 rem
- Pregnant worker with DDE> 0.1 rem
- Entering high or very high radiation area
Incidents requiring immediate reporting
- TEDE > 25 rem
- lens dose >75 rem
- SDE > 250 rad
- RAM release over 24 hours that could lead to 5x ALI
Reports of theft or loss or RAM
- if > 1,000 appendix C, immediately
2. in 30 days if >10 x appendix C
Incidents require notification in 24 hours
all in 24 hours
- TEDE >5 rem
- Lens dose >15 rem
- SDE >50 rem

RAM package receipt
survey for radiation and contamination within 3 hours of receipt
Waste disposal options
decay in storage
sanitary sewer release
transfer to RAM waste vendor
on site incineration
