What did King decide was the way forward?
A march from Selma to Montgomery which began on 7th January 1965.
After a short distance what happened?
The marchers were attacked by the state troopers. Tear gas was fired and the marchers were beaten and whipped.
What happened when King organised another march for March 9th?
Fearing another attack by state troopers King ordered it to be stopped.
How did President Johnson react?
He implemented the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
Why was this act passed?
In order to speed up the process of getting all Americans, including Blacks, able to register for voting.
When did riots occur in Watts, a black area within LA?
August 1965.
What happened at Watts?
In the 6 days of rioting 34 people were killed.
Despite what did King do?
Thought the injustices in Chicago needed more attention.
When did King begin his campaign in Chicago?
January 1966.
How did the campaign not go well?
He continued to challenge city hall and even taped demands to the door of city hall.
How was King losing support?
Campaigners were divided as to whether a non-violent or violent approach would be best.
How had King annoyed many black and white Americans?
Saying he opposed the continued fighting in the Vietnam War.
When were there race riots in the summer of many Northern cities because of unemployment and poor housing?
1967.
What did King decide to do?
Bring people together under a Poor People’s Campaign, once again with little success.
How did President Johnson feel at this point?
Betrayed by King as he felt he had done enough for the blacks.
