When were Blacks facing unemployment and poverty on a larger scale than they had ever experienced?

What did the unemployment lead to?
Marches for jobs and freedom.
In 1963 how many marches were there?
Over 900 demonstration in more than 100 cities with over 20,000 arrests.
When was the march on Washington DC?
August 1963.
How many people were at the Washington march?
250,000 - 25% where white.
What was the march highly effective at doing?
Bringing civil rights to the public’s attention.
Where did the marchers from and to?
Washington monument to the Lincoln memorial.
In the ‘I have a dream’ speech what did King talk about?
A desire for a future where blacks and whites would live together in harmony as equals. He also stressed the importance of non-violent resistance as well as highlighting the main problems and issues that blacks still faced.
What did JFK decide to do?
Meet with the leaders of the Freedom Marches and congratulate them on their success.
What were the American nation now having to accept?
The position of the blacks was going to change forever.
What happened three weeks later?
4 young girls were killed when a bomb exploded at a Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama.
Why was there no justice for the incidence?
A white jury and white judge.
When King held a funeral three of the girls what happened?
8,000 mourners, including 3 clergymen of all races attended the service making it a political event.
What was the bomb intended to do?
Stop the integration of schools and to scare Americans who had been demonstrating for an end to segregation.
What did the bomb instead do?
Shocked the public and helped build support for civil right legislation.
