When was segregation in school announced as illegal?
1954.
What did many states like Arkansas do?
Little to desegregate its schools.
When and what did the Arkansas state press do?
They began a campaign to force desegregation in 1957.
Who was the governor of Arkansas who did agree?
Orval Faubus.
How many black students were registered to attend little rock?
9.
What did Faubus do to stop the students?
Called out the National Guard to stop the students attending school.
What happened on the first and second days of school?
The first day the students didn’t turn up and on the second they failed to get in when they were stopped by the National Guard.
When shocked by the actions of Faubus what did the President do?
Spent 18 days trying to persuade Faubus to obey the ruling although he refused.
When did the students actually get in via a delivery entrance?
Monday 23rd September.
What happened when a large white mob heard about this entrance?
They attacked black as well as the reporters from Northern newspapers who they thought sympathised.
Why did the police do little?
They were on the side of the mob.
What did President Eisenhower order to stop the situation?
Ordered 1,100 paratroopers of the first airborne division to escort the little rock nine.
How long did the national guardsman stay for?
A year.
What were the effects?
Four parents of the students lost their jobs, membership of the KKK rose, Faubus became a hero is many people’s eyes. The events showed the rest of America the scale of the problem.
Four years later what percentage of little rock were black?
3%.
