Can rabies have a long incubation time?
yes and this is why it’s typically seen in older animals

one serotype and MANY genotypes/variants
Is rabies and acute or chronic infection?

Where does the virus replicate?
at the site of entry and then it enters the peripheral nerve and from there, the CNS. This is called Centripetal!
What are the 2 clinical forms of rabies?
furious and paralytic
How does rabies cause paralysis?
rabies causes encephalitis which leads to paralysis
Does rabies affect other organs?
Yes…CENTRIFUGALLY as it moves from CNS to the other organs including the salivary gland. Can move to the Glands days before c/s.
Are neurons infected with the virus?
very few!
what is hydrophobia?
the inability to swallow resulting in excessive salivation
What are the main signs for rabies suspicion in wild animals?
strange behavior and the loss of fear of humans
Which lesion is considered pathognomonic of rabies?
negri bodies
do we use negri bodies as confirmation during histopath?
no because they are only present in 71% of cases
What is the main diagnostic test used for rabies?
DFA—direct fluorescent antibody test
