quiz review Flashcards
a rheumatic disease that affects many systems of the body
lyme disease
systemic disorder affecting collagen
scleroderma
characterized by slowly spreading fibrosis and collagen deposits throughout the body
joint inflammation resulting from infection by bacteria, viruses, fungi
infectious arthritis
mostly involving one joint
a triad of arthritis involving the urethra, eye, intestines and urinary tract
reiters syndrome
uniform swollen digit “sausage digit”
what does RA begin with
activation or injury of synovial microvasculature of endothelial cells
what condition involves crystals of monosodium urate deposited into tissues
gout
an inflammatory, destructive, chronic autoimmune disease of multiple joints and connective tissue
rheumatoid arthritis
chronic attack- remitting autoimmune inflammatory disease that can affect any system or organ
systemic lupus erythematosus
most common form of lupus is SLE
progressive disease where bones gradually become weaker and thinner
osteoporosis
what joints does AS begin in
sacroiliac
CI’s for tx for a pt w diabetes
if a pt arrives for a tx confused or lethargic
if a pt has a hypoglycemic attack during tx
if a pt arrives for tx exhibiting changes in mental function
osteoporosis is a ____ disease?
flexion
want to give extension exercises
risk factors w osteoporosis
women
post menopause
prolonged sex hormone deficiencies
ovaries removed before 45
family hx
caucasian or eurasian
thin, small bones
hyperthyroidism
RA
liver, kidney disease
diabetes mellitus
osteoblasts do what
build bone and fill in cavities
osteoclasts do what
erode bone and create cavities
common condition of chronic synovial inflammation in children is what
juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
CI’s for inflammatory arthritides
testing except for active free ROM on acutely inflamed joints
hot hydro during acute inflammation
general massage w fever
lypmh drainage proximal to affected joint are avoided w acute infectious arthritis
local massage over acutely inflamed joints or open lesions
joint play on acutely inflamed joints
between flare ups - deep techniques bc it may provoke inflammation
w joint laxity and hypermobility - stretching is used w caution
observations related to AS
gait ax = rigid gait w knee flexion due to hip flexor contracture
lateral view will show HYPERKYPHOSIS, decreased lordotic curve, head forward posture
rib movement is reduced or absent
what tests used for AS
AF rom of hips, SI joints & spine may be reduced due to stiffness and pain
PR ROM reveal mm spasm or leathery end feel
AF rom of spine and hip flexion tests are positive
massage for AS
hot hydro used between flare ups
treat for stress reduction and hyperkyphosis
use fascial techniques on anterior thorax
massage during flare up for inflamm arthritides
if massage is tolerated by client, massage to unaffected areas
30 min tx
relaxation and D. breathing
cold hydro to affected joint
comfort client positioning
massage during flare up for inflamm arthritides
tx time = 30-45 mins
relaxation w D. breathing
client comfort positioning
hot hydro used on chronic arthritic joints to control pain and spasm
rhythmic techniques used
fascial techniques are used in contractures are present
joint play techniques w caution
self care for inflamm arthritides
exercise to pain tolerance
between flare ups- self stretching is used
submaximal isometric exercise to maintain strength of mm’s crossing affected joints
(ex) lateral arm raise w weight but only raising to shoulder level
during flare ups - COLD HYDRO
between flare ups - HEAT
tx goals for inflamm arthritides
- stress reduction / relaxation
- decrease pain, edema, spasm
- maintain joint mobility
- maintain and increase strength
- prevent/reduce postural changes and joint deformities
- reduce contractures - especially in JRA
